Faculty of Health Sciences

Medical Sciences Graduate Program

Program Areas

We offer MSc, PhD, and MD/PhD graduate education and training in five areas relevant to human health:

Information Box Group

Blood & Vasculature Learn more

Area Coordinator: Dr. Patricia Liaw

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the Western world. The Blood and Vasculature program offers outstanding opportunities for the training of future scientists who will develop the skills to study and control cardiovascular disease. Many of the Faculty members in this program take an interdisciplinary approach to their research by coupling basic science research with translational or clinical studies.

Cancer & Genetics Learn more

Area Coordinator: Dr. Roma Sehmi

Graduate students participating in the Cancer and Genetics section of the Medical Sciences Graduate Program join the laboratories of faculty members to investigate fundamental and clinical biomedical problems at the molecular level.

Infection & Immunity Learn more

Area Coordinator: Dr. Ali Ashkar

The Infection and Immunity area includes many highly interactive laboratories with complementary interests. Research within this program is relevant to a number of serious diseases with an emphasis on the basic mechanisms and treatment of infectious diseases (including HIV, herpes, chlamydia, oncolytic viruses, tuberculosis), chronic inflammatory conditions (including asthma, fibrosis, inflammatory bowel disease, and rheumatic disease), as well as treatment of cancer through modulation of immunity.

Metabolism & Nutrition Learn more

Area Coordinator: Dr. Thomas Hawke

Research interests in the Metabolism and Nutrition Program cover a wide range of topics and are carried out by individuals from various Departments including: Pathology and Molecular Medicine, Nuclear Medicine, Biology, Biochemistry, Pediatrics, Medicine, and Radiology.

Physiology & Pharmacology Learn more

Area Coordinator: Dr. Alison Holloway

The Physiology and Pharmacology (PP) Area gives the student an opportunity to conduct research from the level of the molecule to the whole body. There are several research groups and programs with which the graduate faculty are associated. These include: The Asthma Research group; The Intestinal Disease Research Program; The Reproductive Biology group; the Pediatric Exercise and Nutrition Program; and the Cancer Research Program.
